iamtheenemy held a feedback challenge and I got
iamtheenemy, very exciting! I haven't run across
iamtheenemy before in my forays in our mutual fandoms before but I wish I had, she is an awesome fanfic writer. I intended to feedback a couple of different fandoms but ended up reading and falling in love with six stories from CSI and Gilmore Girls, which are both fandoms I usually don't read a lot of fanfiction in - it's a huge relief to actually find a writer who can write in character, whose stories are well written and explore the characters in the shows. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to renew my love for these fandoms.
Title: Living
Fandom: CSI
Pairings: Greg/Sara.
Rating: PG.
I don't read a lot of CSI fanfiction, mostly because I can't find enough good fic, something that has the characters acting, and reacting, in, you know, character. Living is not only good, it's great. From the first paragraph the story's intensity drags you in, letting you experience the world through Sara's eyes, the story is interwoven with the moments and memories from the past and present. Each section is a separate day, a separate case and each sections holds a little glimmer of Sara/Greg. The interaction between the characters is very well done, creating a great sense of deeper feeling and understanding with each word exchange. It's amusing and sad and wonderful.
“Can I bum one?” he asks.
“You don’t smoke.” But she still offers him the pack.
He plucks out a cigarette and places it between his lips. “Neither do you,” he counters, the cigarette dangling precariously as he speaks.
She concedes the point and flicks the lighter on, bringing it to the tip. Greg takes a drag, and she expects some comical coughing and hacking from him, at least. Instead, he surprises her by closing his eyes as he inhales, like he’s savoring the sensation, and then letting the smoke run languidly from his mouth.
Title: Passing Tests
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: pre-Nick/Greg, pre-series.
Rating: G
I have no words for how much I loved this. I love history, I love back story and I love how you have written this. Greg's interaction with the other characters was so well written, I loved his time with Catherine - who you wrote so well - and the dialogue jumped out at me. You know how to pace a story and this just flowed so nicely. The Nick/Greg, or really pre-Nick/Greg, was nicely done and I liked how it wasn't the center of the fic, it was just one more interaction. There is too many moments I love to just pick out one but the Grissom scene especially stood out. You've done such a brilliant job with this one.
Title: Co-Conspirators (companion piece to Passing Tests)
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: pre-Nick/Greg
Rating: PG
I loved this too, though Passing Tests still holds my heart, but I loved the culture of the lab explored here, the sense of history and the characterisation of Nick is really spot on. This fic has a real sense of reality, which just sounds stupid when I put it like that, but it has a rawness to it - it's not a sparkling example of tvland interaction but rather a more down to earth one. Great work.
Title: Pristine and White
Fandom: Gilmore Girls
Pairing: Paris/OMC
Rating: PG
I'm a Paris fangirl, this is my favourite Paris, hell even Gilmore Girls fanfiction I have ever read. I thought you captured Paris's voice here really well, the story flowed really well with some excellent insights into Paris's life. I like the idea of the bedroom and what it represented, I loved Paris act of rebellion against her life was dumping her clothes on the floor. The portrayal of her relationship with her mother was excellent as well, Paris's inner monologue on the situation had me giggling
Pretty soon, Monday turns to Saturday, and I’m forced to endure another of my mother’s attempts to re-assimilate herself into polite society after she besmirched the Gellar name by divorcing my father. It’s a sad display, but I’m dragged along to be on her arm and play the role of the ‘well-adjusted daughter’ in her never-ending production of Millennium Woman. She can’t have the trophy husband, so she has to settle for the trophy daughter.
The city fair was a great choice of location to set the story in and the way you introduced Clyde was excellent, in fact I found Clyde a very enjoyable original character. He was nicely written and his interaction with Paris was amusing. Paris's reaction to the situation was both amusing and saddening and I'm so glad you explored her as a character. This was a very well written fic and I just can't put into words, well words that to justice to this awesome piece of writing anyway, how much I loved it. Thank you for writing such a wonderful Paris story.
Title: Materpiece Threater
Fandom: Gilmore Girls
Paring: Rory/Tristan
Rating: PG-PG-13
I liked these all a lot, though I found the first two more engaging and better written then the others, though that might just be because I haven't watched the first couple of seasons in a while and therefore don't have such a grasp on the characters as you do. The first one I liked A LOT. Great start but it's end was awesome - great dialogue and tension between the characters.
He moved closer and she practically jumped back. "My favorite part, though, was about your hands shaking when I'm around. See, because I knew that I wasn't as bad you thought I was, and I knew I had good hair. But that...that I didn't know."
Her face was on fire, she knew it, he knew it, and there wasn't anything she could do to stop it. "Well...it might just be your cologne."
He smiled at that. "Yeah, yeah could be." He walked toward her slowly and steadily, with a predatory sort of stealth. "Why are you so nervous, Rory?" The question was asked innocently, but the look of amusement on his face made her believe the exact opposite.
"Because you look like you're ready to pounce or something." Her eyes went wide when she felt her back hit the wall and he just kept pressing forward in the same methodic manner.
"Now I'm no doctor, Rory, but I'd see someone about this hand-shaking thing. It can't be normal."
"Thanks...I think I will. Maybe I should do that..." her voice caught in her throat when Tristan got close enough to her that both of his hands shot out to either side of her head, trapping Rory between them.
"Now?" He finished and shook his head, "Now you're otherwise indisposed."
(Okay that's like half the ficlet but I just couldn't pick ONE moment) This bit above is so much love, I adore how you have them interacting. Actually the last ficlet has some great tension moments too, and also some great dialogue. You have captured both these characters perfectly and I love the flow in your writing. Barnes and Noble I found to be the weakest, in writing style and in flow, it didn't, for me really jump out, I also found the writing a bit stilted, but then again I think that might be a personal thing rather then a comment on your writing styles. The second ficlet Home was very awesome, great way to introduce all the characters of Stars Hollow and you wrote them so well. These are all great fics and they make me want to watch the first couple of seasons RIGHT NOW, which is the best indicator, I think, on how well a writer has written a fandom - if the reader feels a strong renewal of love. Such an awesome job.
Plus it had a West Wing reference. You are way beyond cool.
Title: Attack of the Green-Eyed Monster
Fandom: Gilmore Girls
Pairing: Rory/Dean
Rating: PG
The thing I loved best about this story was not so much the central story line but rather the other interactions between characters. Particularly Lane and Rory and Lorelai and Luke, you have some really awesome dialogue here and I think it captures the spirit of the show perfectly, the rhythm is just right as well. Great job.
Thank you for listening to me ramble and for giving me this chance toread and fall in love with your fics, thank you for organising this as well, you have done such an awesome job, I hope my feedback was okay.
